Options in Invisible Braces

Invisible Braces

Costa Rica is a very popular place for receiving affordable dental care…including braces and orthodontic work. The cost is typically far less than prices for orthodontic work in the US or Canada, and patients have a number of options for braces and other teeth straightening systems.

Gone are the days of having only one option: metal braces (not that there is anything wrong with metal braces.) Metal braces are frequently the most affordable solution, and you or your child can express yourself with your own unique choice of colored bands. This can make having metal braces fun, especially for kids.

Adult orthodontic patients are often more interested in straightening systems that are invisible, or nearly invisible. It’s never too late to have straight teeth. Invisible or nearly invisible braces are a popular option among adults that don’t want to distract from their appearance just because they are having their teeth aligned.

Below are some orthodontic options, although please keep in mind that you’ll need to speak to a dentist about the best solution for the kinds of straightening challenges your teeth have and the best fit for your budget.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are a bit like metal braces in that a bracket is attached to the front of each tooth and then wired together. However, the difference is that clear or tooth-colored brackets (and sometime tooth-colored wires) are used to make the braces far less visible. They are a bit more expensive than metal braces and must be cleaned properly in order to stay “invisible.”

Lingual Braces

Lingual Braces are also a bit like metal braces except that they are attached to the backs of the teeth. The wire that connects them is also behind the teeth. This takes a little getting used to and Lingual Braces aren’t suitable for all straightening challenges, so you’ll need your dentist to evaluate your unique needs. It also takes longer (and is a bit more difficult) to adjust these braces. But on the plus side, they are nearly invisible.

Invisalign®

Invisalign Braces® are almost invisible. Unlike the other types, this approach uses a series of custom-designed clear plastic aligners that are sort of like invisible mouth guards. The aligners are replaced about every 2 weeks, so you’ll be using a total of 18 to 30 or so to achieve straightened teeth. But they can be removed to allow you to clean your teeth as you normally would and you might even keep them off for a day for a special occasion. Invisalign Braces are also popular because there are no restrictions on what you can eat.
