An implant supported crown is a dental restoration that replaces a missing tooth by inserting a titanium post to replace the tooth root into the jawbone and attaching an artificial tooth, i.e., crown, to it.   It is cemented in place and cannot easily be taken out.  The process is usually done with only local anesthetic, unless the patient requests sedation. The restoration of choice now is dental implants because they are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth.  They provide the patient with the ability to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, and enjoy all their regular activities without being conscious of or worrying about the teeth. The implant replaces the tooth root.  It is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse (called osseointegration) with the natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for an individual replacement tooth, or for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth.

An implant supported crown is most often the solution recommended by dentists when a single tooth has been extracted. The benefits are:

Crowns are usually made of one of these four materials:

  • Porcelain
  • Gold Alloy (commonly gold, platinum, palladium)
  • Porcelain fused to an inner core of gold alloy
  • Zirconia metal oxide
