Dental Whitening

There are plenty of methods to improve the appearance of teeth. Among the non-invasive methods, one of the most popular is professional dental whitening.

Professional dental whitening uses a whitening agent such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in different concentrations. These compounds release oxygen molecules that force stain molecules out of the tooth by breaking their molecular bonds.

Not all types of stains can be removed with this method, depending on their nature. Stains can be classified as intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic stains

Intrinsic stains come from the inside of the tooth and can be caused by many factors, such as abnormalities in the development of the tooth during early stages, excessive ingestion of fluorides, loss of vitality, etc. Intrinsic stains are hard to eliminate and in this case, teeth whitening can be shown to diminish their appearance. Internal bleaching is another option to consider in these cases.

Extrinsic stains

Extrinsic stains are the more common type, and they are also the easiest to remove. Periodic cleanings and polishing performed by your dentist can help, but whitening treatment delivers the best results.

Types of whitening treatments

In-office whitening treatment

Light activated whitening is a popular in-office method. This includes the use of laser or LED (light emitting diode) light to brighten the teeth. Stronger bleaching agents are used to brighten the shade of the teeth in a single appointment. Due to the high concentration of whitening gel used here, soft tissues such as lips and gums must be carefully protected.

Home Teeth Whitening Systems

This method uses customized trays and whitening gel that is taken home for treatment. However, you must receive instructions on how to apply and use this treatment correctly, and your dentist must approve this as a safe method for each patient.

Failure to do so might lead to poor results and could damage gums and other soft tissues of the mouth. The length of the treatment varies with each brand, but usually requires a few hours a day for 1-2 weeks.

When used properly, home teeth whitening systems are extremely effective. If any post-treatment sensitivity is experienced, it will be addressed and corrected by your dentist.
